Day Four, Hawaii 2015, (7/1/15)

We got up Wednesday morning and packed up.  We didn't feel the need to visit the volcano again since we had our fill the day before so we headed out to make our way to the other side of the island.   On our way to the east side, we dipped down south but this time we were headed east to west using a northern route.

We did a pit stop at What's Shakin' for some fresh fruit smoothies.

They were yummy and they had a cute little orchard in the backyard.

Next stop was 'Akaka Falls.
It was a lovely, but hot and sweaty walk down to a good viewing spot.

Stunning waterfall over 400 feet.

We had lunch in Honoka'a which was a cute little town.  At the restaurant Grandma's Kitchen, some of the owner's family was there with samples of their home-cooked pork.  Tom tasted them and the woman was happy to tell him it was wild pig that was found roadside "still warm".

We saved room for dessert and hit a place called Tex Drive-In for malasadas, which are sugar-dipped, filled Portuguese doughnuts.  We got Bavarian cream, chocolate and guava.

They were beyond good.

I liked this flower out front.
Another stop along the way at the Waipi'o Valley Overlook.  It was gorgeous and not accessible unless you have a four-wheel drive.

Silly faces.
More silly faces.

It was a long drive, but we all survived and the kids were rewarded with a dip in the hotel pool.
The hotel was well located in Kailua Bay so it was easy to get dinner across the street.
